The Cossacks are a population in southern Russia which is hard to define in a few sentences. Their history is long and diverse, but they always forced a free and independet lifestyle from the ruling authorities. As militaristic communities they were known for their incomparable horse riding and fightig skills.
Ivan Onuchko is a Russian Cossack from the Kuban Area. lives and works with horses in Krasnodar. He is surrounded by family and friends, who all try to keep the Cossack traditions alive. But the horse riding techniques that have been used in war times to fight, have now become an element in shows to entertain paying audiences.
So how is it possible to maintain old traditions and at the same time, make a living and be accepted in our modern times?
